Advance Women’s Political Voice

More Women. More Voices. Stronger Leadership.

African Female Voices helps emerging African women build the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate in governance and public leadership. Our non-partisan work empowers women to find their voice and help shape Africa’s future.

Women hold just a quarter of parliamentary seats across Africa. Progress is visible, but equal representation remains distant.

What enables more women to participate, contribute, and lead

Independent. Non-Partisan. Focused on Women’s Leadership.

African Female Voices is a non-partisan organisation focused on strengthening women’s political participation and leadership development. Our work goes beyond representation to understand where progress is happening, where barriers remain, and what enables more women to participate, contribute, and lead.

Our Response to the Gap

Counting Is Not Enough: Women’s Political Leadership Across Africa

#VoteHerIn is an African Female Voices initiative focused on strengthening young African women’s participation in public governance and leadership. At the heart of the initiative is the VoteHerIn Youth Leadership Toolkit, created to turn information about governance and leadership into practical knowledge that emerging women leaders can use. By bringing together governance education, evidence-based advocacy, public speaking, policy engagement, mentorship and peer networks, #VoteHerIn aims to help young women better understand the systems that shape public life and develop the confidence and skills to participate in them.

An important principle sits at the centre of this work: #VoteHerIn is non-partisan and is not affiliated with any political party, candidate or political organisation. African Female Voices does not tell women who to vote for, which political party to support or what political position to hold. Instead, we focus on political participation and leadership development, creating opportunities for young women to understand governance, ask informed questions, consider evidence, form their own perspectives and speak for themselves.

From Interest to Leadership

For many young women, an interest in public leadership does not automatically come with a clear pathway into it. #VoteHerIn seeks to help bridge that distance through a journey of Learn → Understand → Speak → Connect → Lead. Learning begins with developing a clearer understanding of governance, institutions and leadership. Understanding means being able to engage with data and evidence about representation and public issues. Speaking involves building confidence in communication, advocacy and policy engagement, while connecting recognises that mentors, peers and professional networks can play an important role in opening opportunities for learning and participation. Leadership is where these elements come together, enabling women to apply their knowledge, skills and networks within their communities and public life.

The VoteHerIn Youth Leadership Toolkit supports this journey with governance information, data and evidence for advocacy, African case studies and role-model profiles, practical templates, checklists, action plans, mentorship pathways, webinars and learning opportunities. The initiative recognises that there is no single definition of public leadership and no single route towards it. Young women may choose to contribute through political office, public service, policy, government, advocacy, research, civil society or community leadership. The purpose is not to prescribe a destination, but to help make the different pathways more understandable and accessible.

Building Pathways for the Next Generation

The wider ambition of #VoteHerIn is to help create an environment in which more young African women can imagine themselves participating in the decisions that shape their communities and countries. This work connects directly with SDG 5 on Gender Equality, particularly the ambition to strengthen women's participation and opportunities for leadership in political, economic and public decision-making.

African Female Voices also recognises that these pathways cannot be built by one organisation alone. We welcome collaboration with organisations and individuals that can contribute governance expertise, research and data, mentorship, leadership knowledge, educational resources, networks and opportunities for emerging women leaders. Through these partnerships, #VoteHerIn can connect knowledge with practical experience and help make routes into public and political life more visible.

Ultimately, advancing women's political voice is not about telling women what to think. It is about ensuring that more women have the knowledge, tools, confidence and opportunities to think critically, participate meaningfully and lead on their own terms.

Know the system. Find your voice. Take your place.

The Africa We’re Building: Manifesto

Where Every Voice Shapes the Future: Know the system. Find your voice. Take your place.

We believe Africa’s democracy, governance and public institutions are stronger when women have meaningful opportunities to participate in the decisions that shape their communities and countries.

Representation matters. But representation alone is not enough.

Women need access to knowledge.
Women need pathways into public life.
Women need opportunities to develop and exercise leadership.
Women need to be present where decisions are discussed, made and implemented.

Political participation should not begin at the ballot box or end with a seat in parliament.

It begins when women understand how institutions work, have access to information, can ask informed questions, develop their own perspectives, participate in their communities and see public leadership as a space in which they belong.

We call on governments and public institutions

to strengthen meaningful opportunities for women to participate in governance and public decision-making, and to make pathways into leadership more visible and accessible.

We call on political institutions

to look beyond representation alone and strengthen the conditions that enable women to participate, contribute and lead at every level of political life.

We call on civil society, educators, researchers and partners

to invest in civic knowledge, leadership development, mentorship, evidence, networks and practical opportunities that help emerging women leaders move from interest to participation.

We call on women

to learn how the systems around them work. To ask questions. To develop their own perspectives. To use their voices. To participate in the places where change happens. And, where they choose, to step forward and lead.

There is no single path into public leadership.

It may begin in a community, a university, civil society, research, advocacy, policy, government or political office.

What matters is that women can see the pathway, access the pathway and have a meaningful opportunity to walk it.

Our commitment is non-partisan.

We are not here to tell women what to think, whom to support or which political position to take.

We are here to strengthen women's ability to understand, participate, speak for themselves and contribute to the decisions shaping Africa's future.

The representation gap will not close through aspiration alone.

It requires knowledge. Opportunity. Participation. Partnership. Leadership.

Africa's future is being shaped by decisions made today.

African women must have meaningful opportunities to help shape them.
