Portugal's vibrant music scene, picturesque landscapes, and warm Mediterranean climate make it an ideal destination for avid music lovers looking for an exceptional festival experience. Among the many festivals held in Portugal, Afronation Festival stands out as a celebration of African and Afro-Caribbean music, culture, and lifestyle. To help you plan and enjoy this extraordinary event, we present a comprehensive guide with essential tips and recommendations.
1. Plan Well in Advance:
As Afronation Festival attracts a large number of visitors from around the world, it's essential to plan and book early. Start your preparations several months in advance, securing your festival tickets, accommodation, and flights. By doing so, you'll have a better chance of finding the best deals and ensuring a stress-free experience.
2. Choose the Right Accommodation:
Afronation Festival takes place in various locations along the Portuguese coast, including the cities of Portimão and Portinho da Arrábida. Carefully research and consider the proximity of your accommodation to the festival venue, ensuring it provides both comfort and convenience. Options range from hotels and vacation rentals to camping sites, enabling you to find something that suits your preferences and budget.
3. Pack Accordingly:
Portugal's summer temperatures can be quite high, so pack lightweight and breathable clothing to stay comfortable during the festival. Don't forget essentials like sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes for long hours on your feet. It's also a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the event.
4. Familiarize Yourself with the Festival Schedule:
To make the most of the Afronation experience, study the festival schedule and artist lineup in advance. Highlight the performances you're most excited about and plan your days accordingly. By doing this, you won't miss out on your favorite acts and can optimize your time at the festival.
5. Explore Portuguese Cuisine and Culture:
While the Afronation Festival is undeniably about the music, a trip to Portugal is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the country's rich culture and culinary delights. Take time to explore the local cuisine by indulging in traditional Portuguese dishes like bacalhau (codfish), pastéis de Belém (custard tarts), and piri-piri chicken. Venture beyond the festival grounds to discover Portugal's beautiful beaches, historic landmarks, and enchanting cities.
6. Stay Hydrated and Energized:
Remember to stay hydrated throughout the festival. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it regularly to quench your thirst under the sun. Additionally, ensure you have snacks and energy-boosting food on hand to keep your energy levels up. Many festivals offer a wide range of food stalls catering to diverse tastes, so take advantage of the local cuisine.
7. Embrace the Festive Atmosphere:
The Afronation Festival brings together people from different cultures and backgrounds, creating an inclusive and vibrant atmosphere. Embrace the spirit of the event, engage with fellow festival-goers, and make lasting memories. Respect the festival rules, be mindful of your surroundings, and contribute to a positive and inclusive environment.

These events are not only a platform for celebrating music but also an opportunity for self-expression and creating unforgettable memories. However, it's crucial to prioritize safety, especially for Black women who may face unique challenges and considerations. Here are must-have items and safety tips to ensure an enjoyable and secure experience for Black women attending festivals and concerts this summer.
1. Research the Venue and Surrounding Area:
Before attending any event, research the venue and its neighborhood. Familiarize yourself with local safety conditions, nearby transportation options, and potential risks. Look for event-specific information such as emergency exits, medical facilities, and designated safe spaces.
2. Stay Connected:
Keep your phone fully charged and carry a portable charger to ensure you have enough battery power during the event. Share your location with trusted friends or family members and establish a meeting point in case you get separated. Consider using a safety app that can send alerts or share your real-time location.

While expressing your personal style is important, comfort and appropriateness are equally vital. Opt for breathable fabrics, comfortable footwear, and weather-appropriate attire. Be mindful of cultural appropriation and participate respectfully, avoiding any attire that may offend or misappropriate.

Dehydration can be a common issue during festivals and concerts. Pack a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day and ensure access to drinking water. Additionally, carry easy-to-eat snacks to maintain your energy levels. Remember to pay attention to any food allergies or dietary restrictions you may have.
5. Protect Yourself from the Sun:
Ensure protection from the sun's harmful rays by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF. Don't forget to reapply throughout the day, especially if you'll be outdoors for an extended period. Consider bringing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing to shield your skin.
6. Utilize Personal Safety Tools:
A few useful safety tools to consider bringing along include a personal alarm, pepper spray (if legal in your area), or a whistle. These items can be discreetly carried and provide an additional layer of personal security.

Maintain situational awareness during the event. Trust your instincts and stay away from any situations or individuals that make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Stay in well-lit areas and travel with a group whenever possible.

It began in 2018 with the intention of bringing together women and families affected by gender-based violence in various locations.
The event will be held at Mzansi Resort, formerly known as Morula Sun, in Mabopane City of Tshwane on August 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. till late in the evening. This year's theme is All Black with all shades of Green Berets.
Tebogo Manganye, the event manager, announced that throughout the day, the program would include speeches from motivational speakers, community leaders, gospel singers, priests, media outlets, GBV NGOs, and churches, as well as representatives from pertinent government agencies and the #Enough With Our Sisters Ambassadors Sophie Ndaba, President Gay, and MC Mawisa.
According to Manganye, holding a GBV event contributes to bringing attention to gender-based violence's prevalence, causes, and effects. "Funds will be raised during the event through gate takings (tickets are R100 at Computicket and R150 at the gate), donations, and pledges in order to support affected families and GBV NGOs and Church initiatives," she said.
It presents a chance to inform the public on the many types of GBV, their effects on survivors and society, and the significance of preventative and intervention measures. The speaker asserted that we can create a society that rejects violence and upholds equality and respect by spreading information and understanding.
She also said that the generous donations would be put to good use because 60% of the revenues would go to #EnoughWithOurSisters, 20% would go to churches, and 20% would go to GBV-based NGOs.
"By working together, we can improve our community and leave a lasting impression. We are looking forward to your valuable attendance at the event and greatly anticipate your positive response," stated Molapo.

African women in business
“The most likely person to become an entrepreneur is African woman” said Randall Lane, chief editor of Forbes, as they officially launched the first ever Forbes 30 under 30 Africa summit. The highly anticipated summit was hosted in Botswana. The theme for the launch was “The African Century; unlocking the continent’s biggest opportunities through inspiration, innovation and exploration.” The summit started off in the capital city of Botswana, Gaborone, were the Forbes under 30 delegates from across the world were welcomed by dazzling local cultural performances, and of course the President of the Republic of Botswana Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi. Local artists were on stage showcasing their talent, and the delegates were engaging in this once in a lifetime networking experience offering life changing opportunities. The attendance list was packed with selected entrepreneurs from Botswana, leading young innovators and trailblazers including the likes of Kenya’s social media sensation Elsa Majimbo, and one of Africa’s treasured businessmen Dr Patrice Motsepe, who is the founder and chairman of African Rainbow minerals and forms part of the Forbes self-made billionaire list.
The president of Botswana motivated young entrepreneurs as well as aspiring youth who are ready to take over the world’s economy through learning about entrepreneurship, business management, financial planning, contract management in business transactions, and mentorship from the ones that have already made it. Dr Mkgweetsi spoke of the significance of this summit and how, if used for the right purpose, the African youth can summon solutions to challenges through their innovation, ideas, disruptions and activism. However, an anonymous source states that some locals and international delegates felt as though the summit was a waste of time and less impactful as the speakers did not bring their best at the table. In addition, they said it was nothing more than an “expensive vacation” as some service providers hiked their prices.
The Forbes delegates moved from Gaborone to Kasane which is known for the beautiful Chobe river, incredible wildlife, and is also ranked top among countries with a beautiful sunrise experience. It is also the location of the 1st ever AFI (African Fashion International) fashion show, showcasing one of the best African designers from across the continent. The event ended with a sunset cruise and a late night bush party held in a five star lodge known as Mowana Safari Lodge and a morning safari drive into the Chobe national park.
